What is Margin?
The leverage principle in futures trading is primarily reflected in the margin system. When trading futures, you don’t need to pay 100% of the contract value. Instead, you only need to deposit a small portion of the contract value as collateral (margin) to participate in buying or selling futures. This collateral is called margin.
Factors Affecting Margin
- Leverage: The higher the leverage used by the trader, the lower the required margin.
- Contract Price: Changes in the contract price affect the required margin amount.
- Contract Quantity: An increase in contract quantity leads to higher margin requirements.
Example:
Suppose investor A trades a BTCUSDT futures contract, and the current BTC price is 50,000 USDT.
If A holds a position valued at 1 BTC with 5x leverage, then the position margin required is 10,000 USDT.
If leverage is increased, the margin required decreases; if leverage is reduced, the margin required increases.
Initial Margin
- Initial margin is the minimum margin required when opening a position, shown as “order cost” when placing an order.
- Initial Margin = (Position Value ÷ Leverage Multiple) + Estimated Opening Fee at order placement.
- After the order is fully executed, any remaining balance (after deducting the actual opening fee) will be automatically returned to available assets.
Position Margin
- After the position is established, the current position margin can be viewed under “Positions” in the futures trading interface.
- Initial Position Margin = Position Value ÷ Leverage Multiple.
- In isolated margin mode, the position margin can be adjusted by using the “+” or “–” button or by changing the leverage multiple.
